Lung Cancer: Why Understanding Your Risk Could Save Your Life
Articles | Lung Cancer: Why Understanding Your Risk Could Save Your Life
We often think of lung cancer as something that affects “other people”—people who has smoked a long-time or individuals exposed to high-risk environments. But the truth is, lung cancer affects a wide range of people, and its risks can touch any family, any community, anywhere—including right here in Mississippi.
Today, lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths both nationally and in our state. Despite advances in detection and treatment, too many cases are still diagnosed too late. And that’s often because people simply don’t know they’re at risk.
Understanding Risk Is the First Step
Yes, cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer. But it’s not the only one. In fact:
Up to 20% of lung cancer cases in the U.S. occur in people that never smoked.
Exposure to secondhand smoke, radon gas, asbestos, diesel exhaust, and air pollution significantly increases risk.
Family history and genetic predispositions matter.
Previous radiation treatments to the chest can also elevate risk over time.
Mississippi communities are especially vulnerable due to high smoking rates, limited access to early screening, and environmental disparities. That’s why awareness—especially localized awareness—is essential.
The Importance of Early Detection
Lung cancer is most treatable when found early, but symptoms are often silent in the beginning stages. Persistent coughing, unexplained weight loss, or shortness of breath may not appear until it’s advanced.
The good news? Low-dose CT screening can detect lung cancer early in high-risk individuals. The challenge is making sure people know this screening exists and that they may qualify—even if they don’t currently smoke.
